YouTube Updates: Handles in Live Chat, Veo 3 for Shorts, and Desktop Communities

YouTube’s “News Flash” this week covers three main pillars: identity changes in live chat, significant upgrades to AI tools for Shorts, and quality-of-life improvements for the new Communities tab.

Handles as Identifiers Up until now, your channel name was often used to identify you in live chat and channel memberships. Moving forward, YouTube is swapping this to display your handle across the main app and YouTube Studio. This is a purely visual change for identification; moderators and users can still navigate to a channel by tapping the handle.

Expansion of Shorts AI Tools YouTube is pushing its generative AI features to more markets for creators with English language settings.

  • Tool Expansion: Standalone clips, Green Screen backgrounds, and the AI playground are rolling out more widely.
  • Veo 3 Model: Perhaps the biggest technical update is the arrival of Google DeepMind’s Veo 3 model on mobile. This upgrade increases the length of generated videos from 6 seconds to 8 seconds and includes synchronized sound effects, ambient audio, and speech.
  • Dream Track: For US creators, speech-to-song and the ability to add lyrics/vocals are now available. 🎵

Communities Feature Updates Following an internal experiment that showed increased engagement for channels with Communities enabled, YouTube has released several requested features:

  • Desktop Support: Both creators and viewers can now engage with Communities on desktop. Crucially, creators can access settings and moderate posts from their computers. 💻
  • Pinning Posts: Creators can now pin a post to the top of their community space. This is ideal for welcome messages, rules, or highlighting fan content.
  • Hearting Posts: Similar to comments, creators can now ‘heart’ posts made by viewers to show appreciation. ❤️
  • Sharing: Shareable links to specific Communities are now accessible via the three-dot menu on the mobile app.
